Why does Lea County need CASA?
  • Because New Mexico ranks SECOND in the United States in the percentage of children living in poverty, there is a greater need for CASA advocacy.
  • With adult alcohol and drug abuse on a steady rise, a record number of children are being referred to the Protective Services Department.
  • Too often, children who are involved in child abuse and neglect cases stay in the State’s custody for an average of 18 to 20 months.
  • As of June 2005, there were over 170 children in Lea County who were involved in legal child abuse and neglect cases. This involved more than 90 families.
  • Of the children in the state’s custody, only half of these children will return to their original home.
